Every week in the UK at least 12 young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. Since its formation in 1995, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) has been working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD). CRY supports young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions and offers bereavement support to families affected by YSCD. CRY promotes and develops heart screening programmes and funds medical research. CRY publishes and distributes medical information written by leading cardiologists for the general public. CRY funds specialist referral, screening and cardiac pathology services at leading UK hospitals.
Defibrillators for All is a Whittlesey based charity that intends to place enough defibrillators into Whittlesey so that nobody is more than 3 minutes away from their nearest one. We want to ensure everyone is given the best chance of survival should they have a Cardiac Arrest. We plan to screen our young people on a regular basis so undiagnosed heart conditions are not missed which could result in a sudden cardiac arrest. Children are our future; therefore, we aim to train them at every possible opportunity. During 2019 we have trained our key stage 2 pupils in first aid at all of our primary schools. In October we will train 180 year 7 pupils in CPR and the use of a Defibrillator.
Life after the Forces can be challenging. At VFTH UK, we know that a significant number of veterans find themselves on the streets. That's why we have developed specialist services to support them.
For some, service life can put a strain on relationships, leading to separation or divorce. A lack of experience in dealing with everyday finances can quickly get people into trouble, too. Mental health problems, including PTSD, can lead to addiction and unemployment, increasing the risk of homelessness.
Our main aim is to get veterans back on their feet and our team provide food, clothing and shelter for veterans who find themselves homeless. We then look to see what other support we can provide to get someone off the street.
At our core, our network of volunteers and our links with wider welfare services mean that VFTH UK is there for veterans as they rebuild their lives. For someone moving into a new home or kicking an addiction, our support and funding is an essential part of their journey.
